# Card, invoices and plan changes

> Change your card, get invoices and receipts, add a VAT ID, upgrade or downgrade, cancel the plan, refunds, and move a plan between a personal account and an organization.

Boat bills through Stripe. Open the Stripe billing portal for your card and your invoices:

## Card, invoices and receipts

| You want to | Do this |
| - | - |
| Change the card | Open the portal. Add the new card and make it the default. |
| Pay an invoice that failed | Open the portal. Pay the open invoice there. This never charges twice. |
| Get invoices and receipts | Open the portal. Every invoice and receipt is there. |
| Add a VAT or tax ID | Enter it at checkout. It goes on every invoice. To add it later, [contact support](/support). |
| Know the charge on your bank statement | Statements show **DEDALE AI**, the company behind Boat. |

* Checkout does not add VAT or sales tax on top of the plan price.
* For an organization, add `--org <org>`: `boat --org acme billing portal`. Only the owner can open it.

## Upgrade or downgrade

On the dashboard, click **Upgrade to …** or **Downgrade to …** on the Billing tab. The confirm dialog shows the exact charge.

A change applies at once, up or down:

1. A new billing month starts that day.
2. Stripe credits the unused part of the old plan.
3. Stripe charges the full price of the new plan, minus that credit.
4. The new plan's limits and included time apply at once. The time that you used so far counts against the old plan.

* When the credit is larger than the new price, Stripe charges nothing. The rest stays as credit for your next invoices.
* If the card fails, the plan does not change. Your sandboxes keep running on the old plan.
* A plan change during the [free trial](/free-trial) ends the trial.

## Cancel the plan

1. Open [Dashboard > Billing](https://boat.dev/dashboard?tab=billing).
2. Click **Cancel plan**.

| When | What happens |
| - | - |
| Until the end of the paid month | Nothing changes. The plan does not renew. Click **Keep plan active** to undo the cancel. |
| At the end of the paid month, with credit packs left | Running sandboxes keep running on the packs. An organization drops to the limits of one seat. |
| At the end of the paid month, with no packs left | Boat stops your running sandboxes. Their disks stay. Resume them after you subscribe again. |

* Boat does not refund the rest of the month after a cancel.
* Credit packs never expire. They stay on your account.
* Named snapshots stay. Each one above the first 10 still costs \$1.70 a month from your balance.
* To subscribe again, pick a plan on the Billing tab. You get no second trial.
* An organization owner cancels the organization plan in the Stripe portal: `boat --org acme billing portal`.

To cancel a trial, read [Free trial](/free-trial#cancel-the-trial). To close the account and delete your data, read [Close your account](/data-retention/close-account). A close cancels the plan at once.

## Refunds

Boat does not refund unused time in general. Boat refunds by itself in these cases:

| Case | Refund |
| - | - |
| You [move a personal plan to an organization](/organizations/move-personal-plan) | The unused share of the month, to your card |
| Stripe takes a payment after the plan was cancelled | The full payment |
| A stop is refused because a snapshot failed | No charge for that time. You do not need to ask. |

## Move a plan between personal and organization

| From | To | How |
| - | - | - |
| Personal | Organization | `boat --org acme org migrate`. Read [Move a personal plan in](/organizations/move-personal-plan). |
| Organization | Personal | No single command. See the steps below. |

To move from an organization back to a personal plan:

1. Make your personal account the active wallet: `boat org switch personal`.
2. Start a personal plan: `boat billing plan 20`.
3. Optional: delete the organization with `boat org delete`. You must be the owner and the last member.

When you delete the organization:

* Its plan ends at once. Boat does not refund the rest of the month.
* Each sandbox goes back to the personal billing of the person who created it.

## Seats

An organization pays one plan price per seat. Seat changes are prorated. Read [Seats, limits and caps](/organizations/seats-and-limits).
