# Close your account

> Close your account, reopen it within 30 days, or erase it permanently for a GDPR request.

Closing removes the whole account, not one sandbox.

You can close the account only on the [Account](https://boat.dev/dashboard?tab=account) tab. It needs a dashboard sign-in session. Boat refuses the request from an API key and from the CLI.

## What closing does

Closing does all of these at once:

* It cancels your subscription **immediately**, not at the end of the period. You lose the remaining plan time and unused credits. If you close just after a renewal, you lose that renewal.
* It archives every running sandbox, with a snapshot.
* It revokes every API key and every other session. The session that you closed from stays active, so you can still read your invoices.
* It sends you a confirmation email with the date when Boat purges your data.

## The 30-day window

| Time after closing | State of the account |
| - | - |
| Up to **30 days** | Closed but recoverable. **Reopen** on the same tab brings it back, except the subscription. |
| After 30 days | Boat purges the sandbox data permanently. If you reopen, you get a working but empty account. |

## Permanent erasure

<Warning>
  The same screen also offers permanent erasure, for GDPR requests. It does not wait 30 days. It scrubs the data and your identity when the sandboxes finish archiving. You **cannot cancel or reopen** it. Use ordinary closing, unless you specifically need erasure.
