# Free trial

> The 7-day free trial: a card is required, 25 hours of compute, 2 sandboxes at once, 2-hour auto-stop, no large sizes. How it ends, how to cancel it, and how to lift the limits.

Your first plan starts with a free 7-day trial. Checkout asks for a card. **There is no free tier without a card.**

| Rule | Trial | After the first payment |
| - | - | - |
| Length | 7 days, then Stripe charges the plan | - |
| Card | Required at checkout | - |
| Compute | 25 hours in total, all sandboxes together | The plan's [included time](/pricing#plans) |
| Sandboxes at once | 2 | The plan's limit, 100 or more |
| Starts (create, fork, resume) | 5 per minute, 25 per hour, 75 per day | 12 / 60 / 200 or more |
| Auto-stop | Required, 2 hours maximum | Up to 30 days, or off |
| Sizes | `small` and `default` | All sizes. `xlarge` needs the \$100 plan or higher. |

* Stop, resume and fork do not reset the 25 hours.
* A resume gives the sandbox a new auto-stop window of 2 hours or less.
* The trial limits stay until the first payment.
* A change to another plan during the trial ends the trial. Stripe charges the new plan at once.
* `boat limits` shows the trial limits and the hours that you have left.

## Who gets a trial

* A person gets one trial. An account that subscribed before restarts the plan with no trial.
* Organizations get no trial. An organization plan is paid from the first day.
* Boat can refuse a trial to an identity that looks like a repeat sign-up. The error is `trial_blocked`. If this is wrong, [contact support](/support).

## End the trial early

Pay now to lift every trial limit at once:

1. Open [Dashboard > Billing](https://boat.dev/dashboard?tab=billing).
2. Click **Upgrade now**.

Stripe charges the plan price at once. The 7-day period then ends, and the first month starts that day.

Are you a member of an organization that pays? Then switch to it with `boat org switch <org>`. Its sandboxes do not use your trial limits.

## Cancel the trial

| How | What happens | Charge |
| - | - | - |
| **Cancel trial** on [Dashboard > Billing](https://boat.dev/dashboard?tab=billing) | The trial ends now. Boat stops your running sandboxes. Their disks stay. | None |
| Cancel in the Stripe portal (`boat billing portal`) | The trial runs until its end date, then ends. | None |

After a cancel, **Upgrade now** no longer works. To keep using Boat, subscribe again from the Billing tab. You get no second trial.

## Errors you can get during the trial

| Status | Code | Cause | Fix |
| - | - | - | - |
| `400` | `trial_auto_stop_required` | No auto-stop, or an auto-stop above 2 hours | Set `--ttl 7200` or less, or end the trial. |
| `403` | `trial_machine_class_not_allowed` | You asked for `large` | Use `default`, or end the trial. |
| `429` | `limit_reached` | 2 sandboxes already run | Stop one, or end the trial. |
| `429` | `rate_limited` | 5 starts in the last minute, 25 in the last hour, or 75 in the last day | Wait, or end the trial. |
| `429` | `trial_compute_limit_reached` | You used the 25 hours | End the trial. |

For every limit and error after the trial, read [Limits and errors](/limits).
