The start rate is the limit that most accounts hit first. Create, fork and resume each count as one start.

Limits per plan

  • The start windows roll. Boat counts the starts of the last 60 seconds, the last hour and the last 24 hours.
  • Nothing resets at midnight. A start stops counting 24 hours after it happened. Boat does not show when the next start becomes free.
  • An organization multiplies every number in this table by its seats. Read Seats, limits and caps.
  • A stopped sandbox does not count against “at once”.
  • Check what you have left with boat limits, or GET /limits.

Other limits

For the command limits, read Background commands and Command history and logs.

Retry rules

  • The API sends no Retry-After header. Read the wait from the body: retryAfterSeconds on a 503, retryAfter on an IP limit, and window on rate_limited.
  • For rate_limited with window: "minute", wait 60 seconds. For hour and day, pace your starts. A retry loop does not help.
  • A start refused with rate_limited does not count as a start.
  • Send an Idempotency-Key header on create and fork. A retry with the same key then never makes a second sandbox, and it does not spend a start.
  • The CLI does not retry for you. It prints the limit message and exits with an error.
